The word "telecommunication" refers to the communication method that uses wired electricity, radio or light to transmit information. It originated from the wired telegraph and wired telephone invented in the 19th century. As for China at that time, in 1879, Li Hongzhang, an official of the Qing Dynasty, built a military telegraph line in China for the first time. By 1881, this military telegraph line, which originally ran from Dagu to Tianjin, extended south to Shanghai, and It was also opened to the general public and was completed on December 28, in 1881.
 
To commemorate this day, in the 36th year of the Republic of China (1947), the Ministry of Transportation designated December 28 every year as "Telecommunications Day".
