Overseas Student Club at JUST Joins Indigenous Elders for a Day of Shared Learning and Dining.

On November 2, in 2026, the Overseas Student Association’s volunteer culinary team from JUST visited the Senior Health Station in Xinxian Village, Wulai District, New Taipei City, to host a "Youth-Elder Shared Learning and Dining" event. The initiative was made possible through the support of the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Sprout Project, the Yuxiu Education Foundation, and the Tan Sheng-dao Charitable Foundation.
The event centered on two key activities:
• Shared Learning: Students guided Atayal elders in a hands-on DIY craft session, using modeling clay and translucent film to create multi-layered, floral-themed decorative lanterns.
• Shared Dining: Applying their culinary training, the students prepared a meal tailored for the elders—four dishes and a soup, all easy to consume. A standout dish was the "spicy-tangy shredded green papaya salad," prepared in the traditional style of the Yunnan-Burma region; a student from Myanmar shared the story behind the dish and explained the preparation process to the group.
Faculty advisor Chen Yi-fen noted that the event served as a practical application of classroom learning. More importantly, it successfully bridged the generational gap between the university students and the elders through cooking and handicrafts, showcasing both the professional culinary skills and the compassionate social engagement of the students at JUST.
