National Medical Day
During the Anti-Japanese War, many foreign missionaries came to Taiwan to set up schools and hospitals, which made a great contribution to China, which was short of medical supplies at the time. People gradually began to believe in Western medical techniques and equipment, but ignored our traditional Chinese medicine.
The Western medical community holds power in health administration and has proposed abolishing traditional Chinese medicine, including "traditional Chinese medicine is unscientific" and "reforming politics should start with abolishing traditional Chinese medicine." On February 14, 1929, the Central Health Committee meeting passed the proposal of Yu Yan, a Western doctor, to "abolish traditional medicine to remove obstacles to medical and health care," and decided to ban traditional Chinese medicine and stop registering traditional Chinese medicine at the end of 19th year.
The order to abolish "Traditional Chinese Medicine" triggered backlash and dissatisfaction in the traditional Chinese medicine community at the time. A nationwide protest march was held at the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce Auditorium on March 17. At that time, Mr. Chen Guofu and Mr. Chen Lifu petitioned Chairman Chiang Kai-shek on behalf of this group of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, who then withdrew the decree, giving traditional Chinese medicine an opportunity to reform and regenerate. Later, in order to commemorate the successful protest of this group of Chinese medicine practitioners, the Chinese medicine community designated March 17 as "National Medicine Day" to commemorate it.
