The JUST's volunteer chef team accompanied tribal elders in experiencing the joy of paper tearing and collage.
Sponsored by the Ministry of Education's Deep Cultivation Project, the Yu-Hsiu Education Foundation, and the Tan Sheng-Tao Charity Foundation, the "Hsiu-Hsiu Big Baby Volunteer Chef Team" from JUST, comprised of students from the Overseas Chinese Students Association and the Daruan Society, set off for the Xinxian Tribal Senior Health Station in Wulai District, New Taipei City on November 28th. They accompanied Atayal elders in a shared meal and learning activity, providing them with nutritious food and teaching them collage making, allowing them to slowly create their own unique and joyful expressions.
The collage activity was led by the Daruan Society, where the elders first tore colored paper into many small pieces, then guided them to collage the colorful paper scraps into indigenous facial totem images. The atmosphere at the event was extremely lively. Li Zhuyun, who led the activity, stated that the process of tearing and collaging paper not only allows seniors to experience the joy of creation but also trains their hand-eye coordination, provides visual and auditory sensory stimulation, improves hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills, and enhances patience and concentration. According to relevant research, this may help improve brain function and delay degeneration or memory loss.
